The most important time to strength train is when you are dieting!

When dieting your body will use your muscles for energy unless you are weight training. The problem with this condition is twofold. The first issue is muscles are what gives your body shape. If you lose muscle mass the "baggy triceps" or "flabby thighs" syndrome will occur.

The more serious issue is muscle loss. When you come off your diet you will actually gain more weight back than pre-diet weight. This is because muscle burns more calories then fat and you lose muscle mass in dieting if you are not weight training.
The wholistic long term approach to health and weight control includes three components; nutrition/diet consistancy, strength training and cardiovascular training.
